sound website

Below is the website I used in class. It's a great place to study sound and have fun at the same time. Mrs. Emett

Sound test

It's time for the sound test. It will be this Friday, Dec. 14th. A study guide went home with your students today.

Moon Observation Homework: We will study the moon in January. One of the state core objectives is to have the students observe the moon for a month. We will have a new moon on Wednesday. The moon will start to appear again on Thursday or Friday. I am sending a moon calendar home with your students this week. They need to look at the moon everyday and draw what they see. I'm including a moonrise and moonset schedule, so they'll know what time to look. If it's cloudy, they can draw a cloud. This will only take a few minutes each day. The calendar is due January 20th.

I'm also sending a heat, light and sound study guide home. We have taken individual tests on these subjects, but will take one covering all three on Jan. 7th.

Light Test

There will be a light test on Tuesday, Dec. 8th. The study guide went home today. Please help your child study if you can. There is a coupon on the bottom of the study guide. If someone at home helps their child study and signs the coupon, they can bring it back the day of the test for bonus points.

Heat Test

A study guide went home today for the Heat Test we will have next Wednesday, Nov. 18th. There is a coupon on the bottom of the study guide. If parents will help their students study and sign the note, students can bring the note the day of the test and receive bonus points. Students at this age are still learning how to study. Any help from you will be terrific. Thanks,

Mrs. Emett

End of Trimester

Our first trimester ends Friday. We have finished studying microorganisms and are beginning heat, light and sound. We are beginning with heat. I want to remind parents that if your student needs help with science, they can come see me before or after school, as well as during REAL TIME. Send a note with your student and they will be allowed upstairs to my room.

Microbe Test on Tuesday, Oct. 27th.

Today I'm sending home a study guide for the microbe test. The test is on Tuesday, Oct. 27th. I would like to encourage parents to help their students study for the test. The first page is a list of facts they need to know that relate directly to the test. The next two pages are paragraphs about microorganisms they need to read. I'm hoping reviewing with both of these styles will help your child's understanding and retention. While reviewing, ask your child to tell you what they know about the material and what we did in class to learn about it.
There is a coupon on the first page worth bonus points, if you review the material with your child and sign the note. They will bring the note to school and staple it to the test
for the extra points. Thank you, Mrs. Emett

Mold Homework

If your child didn't turn in their mold homework, they can still turn it in. They need to design an investigation on mold. Here are some examples of questions they might use:

What is the affect of light or dark on growing mold?
What is the affect of moisture on growing mold?
What is the affect of temperature on growing mold?

After choosing a question they need to write a hypothesis. Then they need to plan their experiment and write down the materials and procedure (directions.) After they've set up their experiment, they need to observe it every two or three days and write down their observations. When they finally see mold, they need to turn their observations into a graph and write a conclusion.

Your student was given a handout explaining the homework. More information on the scientific method is listed in one of my previous blogs. Mrs. Emett

Parent Teacher Conferences

Hello! Hopefully you've heard that parent/teacher conferences have been moved up to Sept. 30th and Oct. 1st. I will be gone that week and unable to attend. I am going to leave a copy of your student's grades in the office along with a sign up sheet. If you have any questions concerning any of their grades, sign up on the sheet and I will get in touch with you when I get back.

The students have a new homework assignment that went out a week ago. I'm hoping you've seen the letter. The homework is due Oct. 7th. They are being asked to plan and carry out an investigation on microorganisms. This is Standard V: Objective 2 of the sixth grade science core curriculum. A few suggestions are:

What is the affect of light or dark on growing mold?
What is the affect of moisture on growing mold?
What is the affect of temperature on growing mold?

Please check with your student to make sure they are working on the assignment and being safe. Remind them it is due Oct. 7th. Mrs. Emett

Ice Cube Experiment

My students were given a homework assignment to use the scientific method to find out how long it would take to freeze a small amount of water. Their scores have been recorded. If they would like to improve their score they may do the assignment again. The handouts are in my room if they need another one. Here is a reminder of the scientific method I want them to follow for this assignment:
Question: How long will it take to freeze a small amount of water. (You can choose the amount used.)
Hypothesis: In a sentence, guess how long it will take.
Experiment: Plan and carry out your experiment. Check your water every 30 minutes and write down what you observe.
Results: Make a graph out of your results. Here is a simple graph you can make: Write the times you checked your water along the left side. Write water, icy and frozen along the bottom of your graph. Check off or make a dot for what you observed each time.
Conclusion: Was your hypothesis right or wrong? In one or two sentences tell me if your hypothesis was right or wrong based on your results.

Hello!!!

Welcome to sixth grade science!

We will begin the year reviewing the scientific method and doing some investigations. In about two weeks we will start learning about microorganisms. I absolutely love science and am excited to work with your students. Remember to have your students turn in the disclosure note I passed out. (It is bright blue.) Mrs. Emett
